Backstory for Shifara Black Gold

The city of Zandjiier is known for its instant coffee crystals that offer bold flavor and a rejuvenating energy boost. These crystals are made from concentrated coffee sprayed into large domed mud huts, then dried as the huts heat in the Shifara desert sun. Shifara Black Gold is a sought after drink and a favorite among locals and travellers who pass through Zandjiier. Many have their own take on the recipe, but only the exact ingredients make the traditional Shifara Black Gold.

We’ve translated the ancient texts and discovered modern methods of making this recipe. It’s rich with coffee flavor and while certainly drinkable right away, it gets even better as it ages.

Coffee Liquor Drink Components:

4 Tbsp instant coffee granules

4 C water

3 C white sugar

3 tsp pure vanilla extract*

1 750 ml (3 C) vodka

Drink Actions:

Add instant coffee, water, and sugar to a heavy pot, bring to a gentle boil, and simmer for 1 hour over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. The mixture will bubble up as it cooks. Allow mixture to cool to room temperature. It will thicken as it cools.

Mix vanilla and vodka into cooled coffee mixture and pour into decorative glass bottles with stoppers, mason jars with tight fitting lids, or just pour it back into your vodka bottle.

To serve: pour coffee liquor over ice cubes in a low ball glass. Add a splash of cream to make it even more decadent.

Tips and Hints:

Use the highest grade Madagascar vanilla you can. It’s the secret ingredient that makes this coffee liquor extra special.

This recipe doubles easily if you want to make a big batch for gifting.

You can gift or drink the liquor right away (how else can you product test it?!) but it will taste even better after a few weeks.
