Fridays at the Tavern: Firecrackers (Candied Bacon Crackers)

Candied Bacon Crackers Are Perfect for RPG Sessions

If prepping for your next tabletop game session means cooking for your party, add this recipe to your RPG rotation. These firecrackers are spicy- sweet, bacon-y, and easy to prepare.

Sweet Back Story on Firecrackers:

Hank the butcher and Yara the baker had shops next to each other in the town of Keiff. Each always had an eye for the other, but never quite had the courage to make a move. One day, Yara brought fresh baked crackers to the butchery when Hank was cutting some just-smoked bacon. Hank had the idea to combine the two ingredients for a snack they could share together. It was a simple gesture that sparked a lasting love and a tasty snack their eventual grandchildren would enjoy.

Snack Components:

1 lb. bacon (cut pack lengthwise into 4 quarters)

1 sleeve club style crackers

3/4 C brown sugar (light or dark)

1 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 Tsp. chili pepper flakes

1 Tsp. fresh ground black pepper

Snack Actions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

Set a wire rack into a rimmed baking sheet lined with tin foil.

Mix brown sugar, cayenne, chili pepper flakes, and pepper.

Place crackers on the wire rack. Top each cracker with a 1/4 slice of bacon and spoon brown sugar mix onto each bacon-topped cracker (smooth sugar mixture onto bacon). Bake for 20-25 minutes (watch so they don’t burn), remove from oven and allow to cool before transferring to platter. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Bacon topped crackers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a day.

Firecracker Options: Shake up the recipe! Swap out the hot stuff (chili pepper & cayenne) for garlic powder and chili powder or go for a cumin and chili powder combo.
